Officials with the Town of North Hempstead have moved to squelch a rumor that low income housing units may be going up in Albertson, specifically on Albertson Avenue.

The rumor circulated so quickly that Supervisor May Newburger felt it incumbent to send a letter to Albertson residents, flatly affirming that "no such plan" for low income housing exists.

According to Supervisor Newburger, the rumors began when one of town's board members "spoke about the need for affordable housing for our seniors and young people." A rumor then was born that such housing was targeted for Albertson and would be low income in nature.

While shooting down the rumor, Supervisor Newburger also took note of the affordable housing problem in the town.

"With housing prices at historic heights, it is getting more and more difficult for young working people and seniors to remain in our town," Supervisor Newburger said. "We are losing some of our best and brightest young people because they cannot afford to live here. It is strange to me that anyone would oppose efforts to create housing that will help these young working people."

In addition, the supervisor stated her displeasure with at least some of the people who may have started the rumor.

"Apparently, with Election Day just around the corner, there are some who would like to create confusion and uproar in the community for their political advantage," Supervisor Newburger claimed. "By using the term 'low income housing' such individuals seek to create hysteria and play to people's worst fears. These tactics are truly sad and show a real disrespect for our town's residents."

Supervisor Newburger reiterated the town's commitment to creating and supporting housing for its senior citizens. She added that the town "will never undertake any plan of creating affordable housing without advising the community involved."
