Sixth Precinct police have made no arrests on any of the string of robberies that hit the Roslyn area during the final weekend of August.
That short time period was a particularly bad one for two gas stations in the Roslyn area, not to mention local residents. From Wednesday, Aug. 28 to Saturday, Aug. 31 there were no less than five burglaries in the area. In addition, handguns were used at two of the robberies.
All of the crimes occurred during either the late night or early morning hours. A burglary at the Mobil gas station on Powerhouse Road in Roslyn Heights took place at 2:11 a.m. on Aug. 28. Sixth Precinct detectives reported that seven men, described as being in the 17 to 19-year-old age range, were accomplices in the robbery. One of them had a pellet gun, which was used to fire two shots through the gas station's front window. After the night attendant unlocked the door, the suspects entered and stole cash, cigarettes and candy before fleeing the gas station.
Less than twenty-four hours later, another robbery took place in Roslyn Heights business establishment. Detectives said that on Aug. 29 at 12:47 a.m., an employee of Domino's Pizza was delivering pizzas to customers at 48 Orchard Street. As the employee left his car, three or four men dressed in dark clothing and hooded sweatshirts attacked him. According to police, the suspects punched and kicked the Domino's employee, and then stole his cash and two thermal carrying bags with pizzas inside. The suspects fled down an alleyway near Linden Court.
A gas station on Roslyn Road was the scene of an Aug. 31 burglary. At 11:43 p.m., a man had just finished pumping gas into his car when two men approached him, with one of them displaying a silver handgun. The suspect told the victim to "give me the money." According to police, the suspect was wearing a red shirt and a polka-dotted bandana covering his face. The victim threw his money on the ground and the second suspect picked it up. The two then fled southbound on Roslyn Road.
Earlier on Aug. 31, at 12:40 a.m., a woman was getting out of her car on Rockhill Road in East Hills, where she was grabbed from behind and thrown to the ground. Police said the suspect took her pocketbook, wallet and credit cards, before fleeing in an unknown direction.
The final robbery in the four-day spree occurred between 10 p.m. on Aug. 30 and 3 p.m. on Aug. 31. Police said the burglary took place at a residence on Browers Lane in Roslyn Heights. Entry was gained through the front door after the burglars cut the phone lines.
For the past year, residential burglaries, especially in East Hills, have been a concern of local officials. On several occasions, representatives from the 6th Precinct have talked to civic associations and at community forums, detailing what residents may do to deter would-be burglars. Some tips have included keeping valuables such as jewelry and loose bills out of the master bedroom and into such rooms as the basement, and keeping front yard shrubbery low so burglars cannot make their way into the front door. If a homeowner does not have a canine, then they should at least have a dog bowl visible in the back yard so as to deter burglars.
