Richard Joseph Levin, a commercial real estate broker who grew up in Roslyn, died in Denver on July 31, 2002, after a short illness. He was 48. Richard was born in Manhattan, lived briefly in Elmont and moved to East Hills with his family when he was nine. He attended East Hills Elementary School, Roslyn Junior and Senior High Schools.
While growing up Richard excelled in sports and played Little League baseball and Roslyn Boosters basketball. He also played for the eighth grade basketball team and was a high school varsity wrestler. Richard was an expert skier and active in the high school ski club. In 1964, a counselor at a summer basketball camp nicknamed him "Moose," an endearing moniker that stuck with him for years to come.
Richard graduated from Roslyn High School in 1971 and attended Nassau Community College for one year. During that time, he learned to fly, earning private pilot and instrument rating licenses. A year later Richard transferred to Colorado State University in Fort Collins, where he graduated in 1975 with a bachelor of science degree in psychology. He belonged to the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
After college, Richard spent a year in Vail, waiting tables and skiing. Soon after he took a job as a flight student with United Airlines, with whom he worked for about 12 years and moved to Denver.
During the 1980s, Richard worked briefly in the oil business, securing leases to mineral rights. In 1987 he earned a master of business administration degree from the University of Denver.
In 1994 he married Nerita Cabriana of the Philippines. Richard enjoyed golf and followed professional sports, including the Colorado Rockies, Denver Broncos and Denver Nuggets.
Richard is survived by his wife, Nerita, of Denver; father Matthew Levin of Denver; and brother Charles Levin of Ventura, CA.
A private reception for family and friends was held in Denver. Family members ask that donations be made in Richard's name with a check payable to the Craig Hospital, c/o Beth Garman, 3425 S. Clarkson St., Englewood, CO 80110. Please write "Richard Levin Memorial" on checks.
