Renovation work is currently taking place at Roslyn High School. Among the projects include work on the science labs, guidance offices, the English Study Center, and other areas of the building. In addition, there will be roof repairs, window replacements, and removal of asbestos floor tile.

The latter project has been the scene of some controversy. In recent weeks, people with an organization called "Justice in Asbestos" has been handing out fliers claiming that the company doing asbestos work, S & M Enterprises and Best Roofing of New Jersey, has, in the past, been fined for unspecified "violations of health laws." The fliers themselves were donated by Laborers' Eastern Region Organizing Fund, a Long Island-based firm.

Justice in Asbestos fliers further wonder if the New Jersey-based company can be trusted with the current job at Roslyn High School. They note that several serious ailments may result from unsafe asbestos removal, including asbestosis, respiratory disease, and lung cancer.

In response, representatives of S & M Enterprises claim they are in full compliance with all New York State environmental laws while doing the asbestos removal.

The work at Roslyn High School is not the only facilities improvement project taking place at buildings with the Roslyn Public Schools system. According to school officials, the expansion and renovation project at the Roslyn Middle School is right on schedule for completion before school opens this September. In addition to the areas already completed, such as the new classroom wing, gymnasium and main entrance/administration area, work to be completed over the summer includes an expanded cafeteria and library.

At the elementary schools, upcoming work will include window replacements at the Heights School and new communications systems at East Hills and Harbor Hill Schools. A major renovation was completed at Heights in 2001 and both East Hills and Harbor Hill experienced significant changes under the bond that was approved in 1994.
