In softball action, North Shore beat MacArthur 3-2 in the first round of the Class B playoffs last Friday, with Christie Swiezbin's two-out single in the fifth inning driving in Sierra Neal for the winning run. Zalika Pierre went 3 for 3 with an RBI in the fourth and a later run that inning that tied the score. Pitcher Kim Lerch struck out 12 for the win.
Their hard-fought season ended in the second round the next Tuesday, when they lost to No. 3 ranked Valley Stream South as an opposing player walked, stole second and then scored for the sole run of the game. Junior Meredith Vogenberger's bat was a big reason why the team won their final two regular season games, sending them into the playoffs. In a 13-0 win over Roslyn, Vogenberger hit for the cycle (single, double, triple and home run). Kim Lerch struck out 10 while pitching the shutout and Hayley Hoffman was 3 for 5, according to coach Kevin Mercier. The Vikings ruled their second straight shutout win in dramatic fashion, beating Floral Park 1-0. After playing great defense for seven innings, the offense scored with one out in the bottom of the seventh, when Vogenberger doubled in Lerch to win the game.
