Captain Peter Liotta of the Roslyn Rescue's Hook & Ladder Company No. 1 attended the American Red Cross in Nassau County's Second Annual Real Heroes Breakfast, held May 14 at the Garden City Hotel. The breakfast honored 47 local heroes who have shown "courage, compassion, and unselfish character" in times of emergency. The Red Cross also posthumously honored all Nassau County residents who lost their lives at the World Trade Center on September 11.

Captain Liotta accepted the "Fire Rescue Real Hero" award on behalf of the family of Allen Frye. The award was given posthumously to Captain Frye, a longtime veteran of Roslyn Rescue. A dedicated firefighter and a devoted father of three, Captain Frye received the Fireman of the Year Award in 1998 for pulling a Roslyn area woman from her burning house.

On March 25 of this year, Captain Frye was working on a fire drill on Glen Cove Road in Greenvale, when an allegedly impaired driver struck him and another firefighter. Despite the resuscitation efforts of his colleagues who had rushed both firefighters to the hospital, the injuries proved fatal to Captain Frye.

In addition to accepting the award for Captain Frye, Captain Liotta also received honors. The Red Cross selected him as one of the September 11 heroes. Captain Liotta was one of the many Nassau County-based firemen who did extensive cleanup work at the World Trade Center site.
