Fred Hantman, a past president of both the Roslyn Little League and Booster Basketball, was the creator and driving force behind the "Shoot Hoops for Lymphoma" Basketball Tournaments. Fred's objective was to generate public awareness and raise research dollars for Lymphoma. From 1997-2000, these 3-on-3 basketball games, for boys and girls, ages 8 to 65, annually attracted thousands of players and spectators to the Nassau Coliseum, and each event raised several hundred thousand dollars for Lymphoma research.

Fred, who raised three children in Roslyn with his wife Lesli, lost his battle with Lymphoma in November 1999 at the age of 44. The fundraising event, which has transformed from basketball to golf and tennis, was renamed in his memory. The Third Annual Fred Hantman Lymphoma Golf and Tennis Classic will be held Monday, May 13, at Engineer's Country Club in Roslyn Harbor.

Public awareness and research continue to be the goal. The American Cancer Society, which last year recognized the Fred Hantman Classic as a top private fundraiser on Long Island, continues to be a strong partner in this drive for the cure. Business support, including Madison Avenue Leasing, Silver Star Motor Sports, Pete's Golf, Victor Talbot's Formals, Log-On Computer Mailing Svcs., Candid Litho, and Dany Holdstein - 2 Worlds Dance and Fitness, has been a key to the success of the research funding, as has the time and effort by the friends and family of Fred, and the Long Island community.

ACS ensures that all proceeds from the event go to a Lymphoma research grant at the University of New Mexico named in honor of Fred Hantman.

Golf will tee off at 11:30 a.m. Tennis Session I runs from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Session II is from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Players of all handicaps and levels are welcome. The day concludes with a cocktail party, dinner, prizes, awards and the car raffle drawing for the newly introduced Mini Cooper through BMW (two-year lease).
