The Trinity Episcopal Church will be holding a memorial service for Jean Chapman, who passed away last Sunday, March 10. The service will be held on Sunday, April 7, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Trinity is located at 1570 Northern Blvd.

Ms. Chapman was a longtime resident of the Roslyn area and the descendant of a prominent local family. Her great-grandfather, John Charlick, was the first president of the Roslyn School Board, serving from 1864-1874. Davis Lane, a street off of Main Street, was named for her grandfather, who also built one of the first houses in that area.

Ms. Chapman herself was long involved in civic affairs. After relocating back to Roslyn in 1960, she joined the Roslyn Landmark Society, where she eventually served as its secretary. In addition, Ms. Chapman served in the same capacity for both the Historic District Board and the Roslyn Building Department. She also worked as a purchasing agent for the Roslyn School District.

During her time on the Landmark Society, Ms. Chapman worked with Dr. Roger Gerry in creating the annual house tour book. Each June, tours are given of historic district houses, which have been saved and renovated. The tour book inaugurated by Dr. Gerry and Ms. Chapman is still being updated and published to coincide with each new tour. In the mid-1970s, Ms. Chapman was a member of the Greater Roslyn American Bicentennial Commission.

Outside of Roslyn, Ms. Chapman's work took her to several international destinations. A graduate of Friends Academy, Ms. Chapman attended Wheaton College in Norton, MA for one year. World War II interceded, and Ms. Chapman served as a secretary for the Office of Strategic Services. She also did secretarial work for the Red Cross, working with that agency at its offices in the Philippines. In the 1950s, Ms. Chapman wrote public relations pieces for Nelson Rockefeller during the latter's trip to Latin America. In addition to her service to the Village of Roslyn, Ms. Chapman was also co-owner of an antique shop in Locust Valley.

Ms. Chapman is survived by a son, Robert, of Roslyn Heights, and a sister, Doris Sears of Livonia, MI. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to the American Cancer Society, 75 Davis Drive, Hauppauge, NY 11788. For more information about the memorial service, call Trinity Episcopal at 621-7925.
