A new construction site, this one on Glen Cove Road, north of Northern Boulevard, is near completion. The firm of Kevin Developers, headquartered in Great Neck, hopes to have the site, home for decades of Alexander Liquors, open for business within 30-60 days.

Robert Arnold, a broker for the developer, said they have no tenants lined up yet for the site, whose address is 32 Glen Cove Rd. But in time, the developers hope to have at least two commercial stores in operation. Mr. Arnold said the new site fits in nicely with the general development of the area.

"The whole area is being upgraded," he said, noting the new traffic lane being constructed on Glen Cove Road and Northern Boulevard. Such a lane, he added, would improve the traffic flow at the busy intersection. The new building, Mr. Arnold said, should become a "great presence" in the entire area.

When Alexander's Liquors shut its doors for the final time back in March, it marked the end of an era in Greenvale. Alexander's had been in business since 1944. More than that, the Ladyzinski family, which operated Alexander's, had been a presence on the Greenvale business scene since 1911. Prior to opening Alexander's, the Ladyzinski family had operated a general store and a dry goods store on the site.

Alexander Ladyzinski, the store's proprietor, fondly remembered the generations of regular customers that sustained not only his business, but also other family ventures. He especially remembered business from the estates trade. That is, from the days when Roslyn was noted for its large private estates, themselves a major source of employment for local citizens. The Roslyn area's economy has changed over the years, but businessmen at the site on 32 Glen Cove Rd. will be hoping for the same loyalty from its customers that the Ladyzinski family enjoyed for all those decades.
