On Sept. 11, my husband Bob Hussa was a victim of the World Trade Center attacks. He was one of the thousands of people innocently doing his job. For Bob, that was running the Foreign Exchange Desk at Carr Futures on the 92nd floor of Tower One.

Every morning he left the house at 6 a.m., caught the 6:24 train out of Manhasset and arrived at work at 7:30. The only thing that would keep Bob away from the office was a "round of golf." So I knew he was definitely at his desk that tragic morning running the desk with his young staff. It is still so very hard for me to believe that all those wonderful, hard-working people - mothers, fathers, husbands, wives, brothers, sisters and friends, are lost.

I was at work when my son, Thomas, called and told me that a plane hit the tower. I did not realize the magnitude of it all. It was not until I arrived home and saw the damage to Tower One, then the other tower was hit and the buildings fell to the ground. Deep in my heart I held onto hope, but I truly knew it was over and our lives would be changed forever. How does a family recover from such a tragedy? I truly believe it is with the love and support of others. The Roslyn community has been our strength. The Roslyn School District, staff, parents, students - past and present - neighbors and friends have overwhelmed us with their love, comfort and kindness. It is what has helped our family get through this difficult time. People have also been very generous to Bob's favorite charities. I'm still being asked, "what else can we do?" There is one charity in particular that touched Bob's heart. It is for research to find a cure for (SMA) Spinal Muscular Atrophy. It is The Shea Megale Fund, First Union Bank, 15097 Wetherburn Court, Centreville, VA 22020.

I truly don't know how to thank everyone for everything. It seems to be an impossible task. Although, it doesn't seem enough, a dear friend once told me that when someone shows you kindness, just say "thank you."

Kathryn Hussa
