Sophie Goldblatt Seligman, a Roslyn resident since the late 1950s, died on Saturday, July 21.
Sophie grew up in the Bronx and graduated from Hunter College. As a young woman she worked at New York Hospital as a laboratory technician. During that time, she had a life threatening case of pneumonia which was cured with the then experimental drug penicillin.
She married Alexander Seligman on Flag Day, 1942. Sophie and Al had four children, Richard, Thomas, Diane and Barbara. In 1959 the family moved to "rural" Roslyn when the Long Island Expressway ended at Glen Cove Road.
Sophie's children were her focus. One of the reasons she moved the family to Roslyn was because of the Roslyn Public Schools. She was always very supportive of education and enjoyed watching her children participate in many school activities and graduate from the Roslyn High School. She was one of the first parents to be involved with Senior Party.
As president of the Roslyn Heights Civic Association and as a private citizen, Tom was well known as a contributor to the schools, the school board and community affairs which was another source of pride for Sophie.
In more recent years, Sophie had the pleasure of six grandchildren. The grandchildren live in different parts of the country, but gathered as a family as often as possible at Sophie and Al's home. Tom's son Benjamin graduated from Roslyn High School and the University of Wisconsin. He is now a radio personality in Wisconsin. Matthew, Tom's younger son, also graduated from Roslyn and is entering his senior year at Stanford University. Diane's daughter Sarah graduated early from Lincoln-Sudbury Regional high school in Massachusetts and is involved in social awareness and activity in Boston. Rachel, Diane's younger daughter is a junior in Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School. Richard lives near Chicago and has twin 11-year-old daughters Cheryl and Jaclyn with their mother Jody. Barbara and her husband Irwin Bergman live in Roslyn Heights. They are active in the sport of bowling. Irwin is the Executive Vice President of the Eastern Long Island Bowling Association, part of the American Bowling Congress.
The death of Sophie's sister and only sibling left her nieces Rebecca and Deborah without parents at a young age. Sophie and Al's love and support was always there for them and Rebecca's daughter Hannah is included as Sophie's seventh grandchild.
Sophie and Al left their Roslyn home after 41 years and in November moved to nearby North Shore Towers. She enjoyed the new lifestyle, decorating their new home, meeting new people and running into old friends from Roslyn.
Sophie will be missed but her love and caring will live on through her husband, family and those who got to know her. The family wishes that memorials be sent to the charity of your choice.
