I was greatly disappointed when I read the information in the Roslyn Landmark Society Newsletter Vol. 3, #5. The Roslyn Viaduct "Preservation Alert" should be changed to information alert.
As a member of the Bridge Task Force (BTF) and a 50-year resident of Mott Avenue, the information and decisions the BTF have come to are as follows:
The BTF has decided to replace the viaduct. To receive 80 percent federal funding for the $80 million-plus project the new viaduct must now meet higher criteria. The new structure must be able to move traffic effectively for 80-plus years.
SHPO has already done preliminary investigation for the entire project. Regarding the West End approach SHRO's recommendation has been to save as many trees and vegetation as possible.
Yes, the viaduct will be wider, but the majority will be to the north side where there is ample room. There will be a minimal effect along Mott Avenue. The alignment of the new support columns should not have a negative effect on the "key scenic vista." The overall profile will be quite similar to the old viaduct. What is even better is that we will no longer have to look at the existing rusting hulk. The BTF has also agreed that the pigeons will be out of a home. This will make expansion of residential and/or business districts more pleasurable, complying with the comprehensive master plan.
I would like to invite all concerned parties to attend the public meeting on June 26 at the Roslyn High School.
