Bess Papa, a longtime Roslyn Harbor resident and a local businesswoman, died on Saturday, May 5.
A native of Brooklyn, Ms. Papa moved with her family to Roslyn Harbor in 1963. She was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church and active in its affairs, including the church choir.
Starting in 1965, Ms. Papa owned and operated Save-On Auto Parts, an establishment located on 255-12 Northern Boulevard in Little Neck. From 1957 to 1988, Ms. Papa's husband, Frank, operated a similar store, Save-On Auto Supplies, located on Union Turnpike in Flushing. Ms. Papa sold Save-On in 1998.
"She was a very special person," Debbie Papa O'Donnell, Ms. Papa's daughter, recalled. "Special to members of the church and to her friends and family. She was generous and kind and loved by all. She was very giving, and saw the good in everyone."
In addition to Mr. Papa and her daughter, Ms. Papa is survived by her son, Stephen Papa and a grandson, Drew Papa.

Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head. Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. Mary's Church, Roslyn. Interment Holy Rood Cemetery, Westbury.

John M. Kirby, of Albertson, died on May 4, 2001. Husband of Barbara (nee Bennett). Father of Christopher, Richard and Robert. Father-in-law of Kelly, Pauline and Mary. Grandfather of seven. Brother of Joseph, the late Joan Schoefer and the late Thomas Kirby. Arrangements were made by the Weigand Bros. Funeral Home, Williston Park. Funeral Mass at St. Aidan's RC Church.
