I read with anger and disgust the article in The Roslyn News (Feb. 8) regarding the question of putting an elevator in the Roslyn Village Hall.

For the edification of the Roslyn Board of Trustees, and especially Mr. Durkin, who is running unopposed for mayor, there is no question that Village Hall and any public building or park, inside and out, must be accessible if it was built or renovated after 1992, according to the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) which was signed into law by then-President George Bush.

This building should have been made accessible to all in 1995 and had up to three years to do so. Roslyn Village has been out of compliance for three years and may find itself eligible for penalties.

Mayor Galante wants to do the right thing. It is not only the right thing, but the legal thing to do.

For me personally, the mother of a wonderful, deserving physically handicapped daughter, what is most disturbing is the attitude of the board of trustees. Perhaps they need the experience for a limited time of being confined to wheelchairs. It might open their eyes (and hearts) to obstacles faced daily by handicapped people.

I hope that my Village of East Hills in building their exclusive park and Village Hall will do the right thing to meet not only the letter, but the spirit of the law as well to make our wonderful park and its activities and programs accessible to all.
