Golden Gloves boxing is coming back to Glen Cove on Tuesday, Feb. 27, for a return engagement. "The Golden Glove fights have proved to be one of the most popular sporting events of the year locally, and we are pleased that we can again bring them to our city," said Lou Fugazy, president of the Glen Cove Police Boxing Club.
In addition to being a crowd-pleasing evening, the Golden Gloves night of boxing provides needed year-round support to the local Police Boxing Club, which promotes the spirit of competitiveness and fair play through boxing.
The full 10-bout card of boxing will again be at the Glen Cove High School. The tradition of the Golden Gloves goes back 74 years, to the events sponsored by the New York Daily News. These bouts are held throughout the metropolitan area, to promote amateur boxing and help young people. They have been stepping stones to some of boxing's greatest names, many of whom have gone on to world titles.
Since the bouts coming to Glen Cove are final preliminaries, all of the fighters have been tested in previous bouts. "We expect to see some classy boxing, and some exciting matches," said Mr. Fugazy, himself a former amateur boxing champion.
