The New York Jewish Sports Hall of Fame has announced the recipients of The Jules D. Mazor Award to the Outstanding Jewish High School Athletes of the Year. The recipients for 2001 are Adam Balkan, Sr. of Roslyn High School and Sarah Lowenthal of Bethpage High School.
Adam Balkan is a four-year member of the Roslyn varsity baseball team - pitching, playing centerfield as well as first base. Adam has been All County as well as high school MVP. In addition, Adam has been voted a top high school prospect, class of 2001, by Baseball America. He is also a member of the Bayside Yankees team. Adam is a point guard on the Roslyn basketball team and he was the varsity goalie on the soccer team in 9th and 10th grade. Adam will be attending Princeton University in the fall.
Sarah Lowenthal has been a member of the Bethpage varsity gymnastics team since 8th grade, and has been All-County, All-Conference, All-State, All-American and #1 All-Around in the County. Sarah has been All-County on all four events every year since she has been on the team, and was the recipient of the highest scoring all-around at the 2000 Team Championships from the Nassau County Coaches Association.
The Mazor Awards will be presented at the ninth annual New York Jewish Sports Hall of Fame inductions on Sunday, March 25, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Suffolk Y JCC, 74 Hauppauge Road, Commack.
