Over 50 people braved the cold weather to travel to Roslyn Cemetery last Wednesday morning in order to pay their final respects to Peggy Gerry. Mrs. Gerry, a longtime activist in the struggle to preserve and renovate historic homes in the Village of Roslyn, died on Saturday, Dec. 16.
Among the local residents who attended the funeral were: Village of Roslyn Board of Trustees member John Durkin, former deputy mayor Robert Abrams, Historic District Board member Paula Aridas, Myrna Sloame of the Bryant Library, Maryann Brandl, Carol Prisant, Diane Margaritis, Phyllis Minkoff, Mr. and Mrs. John Stevens, and Marshall Ward.
As noted in last week's issue, Mrs. Gerry was the wife of Roger Gerry, a longtime board of trustee member in the village. A native of San Francisco, CA, Mrs. Gerry moved to Roslyn with her husband in 1950. The couple founded both the Roslyn Landmark Society and the Roslyn Preservation Corporation, two organizations that were central to saving and then renovating hundreds of historic homes in the village. From its inception in 1962, Mrs. Gerry served on the Historic District Board, becoming its chair in 1972. Longtime residents of Roslyn all agree that the Gerrys, more than any other two people, are responsible for the historic village that residents today call home.
