The nominating committee of the Clock Tower Party met recently to unanimously recommend that current Village of Roslyn Board of Trustee member John Durkin be nominated by party members as their mayoral candidate. Deputy Mayor Nolan Myerson was also recommended for re-nomination as a BOT member. Marta Genovese, the current chair of the Historic District Board, was nominated for a third BOT position.
The nominating committee will mail a letter to Clock Tower Party members within a week to announce the date, place, and time of their annual meeting. At that meeting, party members will vote on the nominating committee's recommendations. That meeting will take place sometime in January.
Both the mayoral position and a seat for a new BOT member became open when the village's current mayor, Janet Galante, recently declined a re-election bid.
Trustees Durkin and Myerson will be seeking their fourth terms on the BOT. Both were elected in 1995 as part of an anti-Stop & Shop Clock Tower Party ticket. Mayor Galante, who was then a BOT member, was also nominated by the party in 1995 to become the village's new mayor. Mr. Myerson became the Deputy Mayor several years ago when then-Deputy Mayor Marlene Freeman relocated with her family to New York City.
Marta Genovese became chair of the Historic District Board earlier this year when Craig Westergard left the HDB to serve on the Board of Trustees. Mr. Westergard had been elected to the BOT on a Roslyn Community Party slate that also included incumbent BOT member, Marshal Bernstein. Ms. Genovese had been on the HDB for two years before being appointed to the chairman's position by Mayor Galante. She is an attorney who after 12 years of private practice at a general firm in Manhattan joined the Automobile Club of New York in Garden City as their counsel and director of Government Affairs. In that capacity, she was appointed and has served for the past four years as chair of the legislative committee for AAA New York State. Ms. Genovese is also one of the two lay members of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicle's Medical Advisory Board, which makes policy recommendations to the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles on medical issues affecting driving.
Ms. Genovese is a native of Roslyn and a graduate of Roslyn High School. After briefly moving out of the village, she moved back to Roslyn 15 years ago, where she now resides with her family.
According to Clock Tower Party Chairman Milton Grunwald, there can be no challenges from the floor when party members meet in January. Anyone who seeks to challenge the nominating committee's candidates must compile a petition with signatures from 15 Clock Tower Party members and present it to the nominating committee seven days before the party holds its annual meeting.
