Allyn Van Baalen Zucker, 77, the wife, for 58 years, of the former mayor of Roslyn Estates, Robert Zucker and the mother of former mayor of Roslyn Estates Mickey Zucker, died at St. Francis Hospital on Sept. 2, 2000. She is also survived by her children Alan and Nancy, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at C.W. Post on Sept. 4. Among those who spoke were Dr. Edward Cook, the former president of C.W. Post College, Dr. Helen Greene, the dean of the School of Education at NY Institute of Technology and members of the family, a former colleague and former student of Mrs. Zucker.
Mrs. Zucker graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and was a regular on the Henry Aldrich radio series, a radio disc jockey and performed on the stage. She married her husband, a naval officer, early in WWII. She was a founding officer of the Roslyn League of Women Voters, a Girl Scout leader, vice president of the Temple Sinai sisterhood, a PTA president and treasurer of the Roslyn Estates Civic Association.
She entered C.W. Post as a grandmother, earned BA and MA degrees and served as assistant to the president, alumni director and an English professor. After retiring three years ago she continued on the editorial board of Confrontation, the LIU literary publication and was a board member of the Hutton House Lectures and the Post Library Association. She was an active volunteer for Hospice and Project Literacy Outreach and an avid reader and eternal student.
The Zuckers have resided in the Village of Roslyn Estates for 45 years and previously lived in East Park in Roslyn Heights for nine years.
Carmela DeBlasio, of Albertson, died on Sept. 5, 2000. Wife of the late Frank. Mother of Genevieve and Jonna DeBlasio. Sister of Virginia Romano, Dominic Piro and the late Maria Mastrocinque and Filomena Piro. Sister-in-law of Filomena Lopez, Peter and Irene DeBlasio, Victoria and George Vecchio, the late Anna and Gus Nappi and Frank Romano. Also survived by nieces and nephews. Arrangements were made by the Cassidy Funeral Home, Mineola. Funeral Mass at St. Aidan's RC Church. Interment St. John's Cemetery.
