Nancy Ellen Wulff is a resident of Fountain Hills, Arizona. But when she began planning her May, 2000 wedding to Richard Alfano, also an Arizona resident, she decided to forego her home state. Instead, Ms. Wulff and her family traveled across the country to the Village of Roslyn for the official ceremonies.
Why travel such a distance for what turned out to be a civil ceremony? Well, as a youngster Ms. Wulff wore pajamas from a local thrift shop embroidered with the name "Roslyn" on them. Ms. Wulff's mother had taken a picture of her in the Roslyn outfit, a photo which sat on her dresser throughout Ms. Wulff's childhood. So when she got married, Ms. Wulff wanted it to be in the village that bore the same name as her childhood outfit. There are several other municipalities named Roslyn throughout the country---Roslyn, Kentucky, Roslyn, Washington, plus a Rosslyn, Virginia, to name a few. Ms. Wulff, however, found out about the Long Island Roslyn through a search on the Internet where she came upon the village's website (historicroslyn.org). Late last summer, Ms. Wulff began a correspondence with Mayor Janet Galante that lasted throughout the fall and winter. The purpose was setting aside a wedding date compatible for all parties involved. Finally, a Friday, May 12, 2000 date was chosen.
Ms. Wulff and Mr. Alfano had many family and friends flown into Long Island for the auspicious occasion and lodged them across the street from the village hall at the Roslyn Claremont Hotel. The next evening, Saturday, May 13, a huge reception was held at the hotel not only in honor of the wedding, but also for Mrs. Alfano's 40th birthday.
When the couple asked what the fee of their wedding was, Mayor Galante replied that even though she does not take such fees, she does ask couples to make a donation that would go toward their favorite charity. In this case, Mr. and Mrs. Alfano decided that they wanted to make a donation that involved Roslyn Village. According to the mayor, the newlyweds settled on a $500 contribution to the restoration of the Ellen E. Ward Clock Tower, the village's most famous landmark.
During their week-long honeymoon, the couple visited several sites in Roslyn. Mrs. Alfano's favorite was Trinity Church. "The stained glass windows are absolutely exquisite," she said. "Mr. Tiffany was truly gifted!"
In Fountain Hills, Mrs. Alfano is employed on the administration level in the legal field. Her husband is a musician by profession.
