No cause has yet been determined for a major fire that devastated a building at 19-21 Main Street in Roslyn on the afternoon of Saturday, July 1. According to Village of Roslyn officials, the fire caused the destruction and complete loss of three businesses along with the dislocation of at least fourteen local residents, including some children, who were left without shelter and clothing.
Officials with the Roslyn Fire Companies said the blaze started at about 4:30 p.m. on July 1. The upstairs apartments were destroyed, while major damage was done to the street level area where the three businesses, Color To Dye For, Townsend Salon and Cammy, a clothing store, were located.
Roslyn Mayor Janet Galante said that five local churches in the village are currently making collections to assist the dislocated people. In addition, the American Red Cross of Nassau County is assisting with temporary housing for the group. The Long Island Chapter of the Junior League Thrift Store, which is located in Roslyn, is also assisting the businesses and families.
"There is a need to support the dislocated people further," Mayor Galante said. "The villages urges the community to help by donating clothing and money to support these families."
Donations by check may be made payable to the Trinity Church Outreach at 1579 Northern Blvd., Roslyn, NY 11576 or to the American Red Cross, Nassau County Chapter, 195 Willis Avenue, Mineola, NY 11501. Clothing may also be donated at the Village Hall, 1200 Old Northern Blvd., Roslyn.
Calling the fire a "terrible tragedy for the people affected," Mayor Galante added that she has "faith in the responsiveness of our neighbors that help will come to all in need." The Nassau County Fire Marshal's office is currently investigating the blaze.
