The Beavers began their 2000 playoff season with an excellent defensive game against the Braves. Although Michael McCann, pitching for the Beavers, allowed Malik Oliver on in the first with an infield hit, Michael struck out the next three Braves to end the half inning. It turned out that the Beavers would not allow another hit the rest of the game.
In the bottom of the first, with two outs, Michael McCann singled and stole second and third. Michael then scored on a base hit by David Bayer to put the Beavers up 1-0.
Throughout the game, Evan Waldman made defensive gems at first base, pulling in high throws, solidifying the Beavers already tight defense. There was outstanding outfield play by Adam Singer, David Bayer and Adam Kapner, hauling in fly balls all day. In the infield, Matt Lane, Josh Weinstein and Alex Litt helped out their pitchers by fielding anything hit to them.
The scoring continued in the bottom of the fourth when Michael McCann was hit by a pitch and stole second, third and home to put the Beavers up 2-0. Matt Lane matched Michael's feat when he did the same in the bottom of the fifth inning for the Beavers, scoring on consecutive steals after being walked.
Jason Liberman and Lee Farber's very strong pitching for the Braves combined to hold the Beavers to only two hits in the game.
Jason Reis had come in to pitch for the Beavers in the fourth inning and pitched the last three innings to victory.
