Both the building renovation projects and the student scholarship programs at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University received a significant boost recently thanks to the generous philanthropy of Garry Winnick, a Roslyn native and a graduate of both Roslyn High School and C.W. Post.

Mr. Winnick and his wife, Karen, announced a $10 million donation to the university at its commencement exercises last month. During that time, Mr. Winnick both delivered the commencement address and received an honorary doctorate from the university. He graduated from C.W. Post in 1969 with a B.S. in economics.

The gift is considered the largest in C.W. Post's history. It will fund scholarships in the School of Visual and Performing Arts and the College of Management, as well as to restore the historic mansion, which is the main architectural attraction on the campus and also the center for its academic, cultural and administrative activities. To honor Mr. Winnick's philanthropy, the 89-year-old Tudor-style building will be named the Garry Winnick House.

Úquot;Mr. Winnick's gift dramatically strengthens our ability to endow student scholarships in areas representing two of Mr. Winnick's major interests, business and the arts,Úquot; said Long Island University President David Steinberg.

Úquot;I am a true Long Island boy, born and bred, and very proud of it,Úquot; Mr. Winnick said while announcing the gift. Úquot; My experience at C.W. Post helped shape my success and the school remains a very important part of my life.

Úquot; The greatest reward I have received from my achievements is the opportunity to reinvest my good fortune in the principles in which I believe, and education is one of my highest priorities,Úquot; Mr. Winnick added.

Mr. Winnick was introduced as commencement speaker by Long Island University trustee and Roslyn High School classmate Steven Klar. Mr. Winnick's other gifts to C.W. Post include giving $1 million to modernize and expand the main cafeteria, which has been named the Arnold S. Winnick Student Center in memory of Mr. Winnick's father.

Mr. Winnick's global investment career spans nearly three decades. He is the chairman of Pacific Capital Group, Inc., a worldwide merchant bank and investment firm that has created companies in such fields as telecommunications, media, real estate, health care and biotechnology. He is also the founder and chairman of Global Crossing, Ltd., which has created a network connecting 30 nations and 200 cities around the world.
