I am pleased that the proposal to allow New York City to use our transfer station in Port Washington for its garbage has been killed. I apologize if any inconvenience was caused to you, your neighbors and the rest of the people of the Town of North Hempstead. However, I was glad to see the standing room-only crowd at the town board meeting, the endless phone calls, letters and e-mails to support Councilman James O'Connor and myself in our opposition to this proposal.
As you know, Councilman O'Connor and myself did not support this proposal from the start. It was your support that helped us influence Supervisor Newburger, Councilman D'Urso and Councilwoman Banks that this proposal was not good for Roslyn, Port Washington, Great Neck, Manhasset or any other community in North Hempstead.
I am glad to see that in a situation like this, the people have spoken and their elected officials heard them. This is what a democracy is all about.
I look forward to working with you in the future to prevent situations like this from ever happening again and that you are always adequately informed. I am here for you and committed to your interests. Hearing from you and working with you is how, together, we will make North Hempstead the best it can be.
Angelo P. Ferrara
Councilman
Town of North Hempstead
