After reading The Roslyn News for the last several issues it is upsetting to read about the negativity of the upcoming election in the Village of Roslyn. Mayor Janet Galante has worked hard for all the residents and merchants in this community. The downtown has received awards over the last two years under the stewardship of Mayor Galante. The beautification of the entire village with tree plantings, shrubs and flowers makes for a wonderful environment to live. The increased positive profile of our community with our municipalities is a testament to our mayor. I remember when there was a lawsuit from Nassau County and the former mayor would not even consider settling. There was a lawsuit with the Bryant Library pending before Mayor Galante when she took office. She was able to settle upwards of 11 lawsuits that the former administration left. The revitalization of the downtown near the Roslyn Railroad Station is all due to Mayor Galante's administration. For far too long this area was an eyesore and blighted. Look today as the buds are forming on the newly planted trees from last year's Arbor Day festivities. Mayor Galante was the one who finally moved the county to work on the Roslyn Grist Mill in the downtown area. The Grist Mill will be the linchpin for the revitalization of the downtown area. Just when county monies were being cut, Mayor Galante announced that $151,000 from the county was being spent for the engineering costs to move the Grist Mill one step closer to being opened.
As far as the election issues...there are none! It is most unfortunate to criticize someone for a proposal that was not adopted. The modest increase for the mayor's salary is warranted.
Small villages like Roslyn need stable leadership. Four-year terms provide the opportunity for a mayor to affect change and complete projects.
The Clock Tower Party has been an asset to the village through Mayor Galante and Trustee McCann. The nominating committee saw fit to decline to nominate Mr. Bernstein. I trust the nominating committee's judgment.
