As the March 9 date of the final round of the Golden Gloves preliminaries at Glen Cove High School nears, the Glen Cove Police Boxing Club is a busy place. Some 400 young men and women from Glen Cove and the surrounding communities use the boxing facility under the careful guidance of head coach Frank Pena assisted by Rob Richardson and Tito Soto. To date the Golden Gloves hopefuls are Shawn Davis, 220 lbs. super heavy weight and Pete Figueroa, 165 lbs. middle weight.
Depending upon elimination bouts now under way, a fight card of 10 to 12 bouts will be held in Glen Cove. The young fighters who make this final preliminary have already won in earlier elimination bouts throughout the area, assuring some lively fights. Heavy weight and super heavy weight bouts are scheduled for March 9.
The Glen Cove Police Department is one of the founding fathers of the boxing club as is businessman Lou Fugazy, a former amateur boxer and New Jersey champion. The club is open to young people who are welcome to drop in and talk to the experienced volunteer staff. The youngsters can learn the fundamentals of boxing and the art of self defense. Most pick up some boxing skills and learn how to train and develop physical and mental agility, skills that benefit them throughout their life.
Tickets for the March 9 preliminaries are $15 each available at the Glen Cove Police headquarters, Glen Cove Stationery on Glen Street, Louie's Lounge on Glen Cove Avenue and Delicious Pizza in the Forest Avenue shopping center.
