The final round of the Golden Gloves preliminaries has, once again, been awarded to the Glen Cove Boxing Club, according to club President Lou Fugazy. A full card of up to 12 bouts will be staged at Glen Cove High School on Thursday, March 9. The first gong sounds at 8 p.m. and a full house is expected, similar to last year's sell-out.
Now in its 73rd year, the Golden Gloves is an area-wide boxing tournament that has been the cradle for many champions. It gives local clubs and their young stable of fighters a chance to hone their skills against others. Title holders such as Floyd Patterson and Sugar Ray Robinson are among the great names of boxing that have emerged from the Golden Gloves.
The young fighters who will box in Glen Cove on March 9 have already won their spurs in earlier elimination bouts throughout the area. Heavyweight and super-heavyweight bouts are scheduled for the evening¬among the most exciting classes. One of Glen Cove's most popular young fighters is scheduled, the up-and-coming Shawn Davis.
Proceeds of the event support the year-round program of the Glen Cove Boxing Club, which is a PBA- supported activity for young people in the North Shore area. Tickets, at $15, will be available through many local outlets to be announced.
