Edward Gibstein of Roslyn, winner of the Richardson Invitational and low amateur honors in the Long Island Open Championship, has been named the 1999 Long Island Golf Association's "Player of the Year" for the second time in his career.
"Ed is a tremendous competitor and outstanding golfer who had another terrific season," said Joe Donahue, president of the Long Island Golf Association (LIGA). "He definitely played up to the standards for which the award was founded."
In addition to defending his Richardson crown and capturing low honors in the Long Island Open Championship, Gibstein, who was named player of the year in 1994, finished second in the Met Amateur Championship and National Invitational, fifth in the MGA Ike Championship, qualified locally for the United States Amateur Championship and was a sectional qualifier in the USGA Mid-Amateur Championship.
Founded in 1993, the LIGA Player of the Year Award recognizes golfing merit and the gentlemanly traits that characterize golf's tradition and all it represents. Past winners of the award include Phil Gutterman, 1993; Ken Bakst, 1995, '96, '97 and Malcolm Smith, 1998.
