Last week, the Clock Tower Party, the major political organization in Roslyn, met to nominate two Board of Trustee candidates for next year's March 21 village elections. Two incumbents, Marshall Bernstein and Louise McCann, are up for re-election. While the Clock Tower Party renominated Ms. McCann, it failed to do the same for Mr. Bernstein. Instead, Wayne Marr was nominated by the party for the second trustee position. Mr. Marr is a member of the Village's Zoning Board of Appeals.
The Clock Tower Party's actions came as no surprise to Mr. Bernstein, who claimed that Mayor Janet Galante had "stacked the nominating committee" of the party against him. In recent months, Mr. Bernstein, along with other BOT members, has voted against the village budget, a pay increase for the mayor's office and the extension of current BOT term limits. BOT members currently serve for two years. The new proposal would have extended the term to four years.
Trustee Bernstein is intent on running for re-election, this time as a nominee of a new, still unnamed political party. If a new party is born, it will mark the second little rebellion that has taken place in Roslyn in the past year. Earlier this year, a last-minute write-in campaign against Mayor Galante's own re-election took place, eventually falling short of its goal.
