Four Roslyn High School students were winners in various Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contests. Andrew Hertz won first place in The Urban League of Long Island/Clarence R. Hart Memorial Senior Essay Contest. English Department Chairperson Dr. Donald Morrongiello wrote in a congratulatory letter to Andrew, "Your piece was a sensitive tribute to the understated power of Dr. King, his importance for all Americans, and the implications of his beliefs even '31 years after his death.'"
Two Roslyn students won the top two prizes in The Coca-Cola/Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior Essay Contest. Winning first place was David Moskowitz with a piece entitled, "Human(e)." Dr. Morrongiello called David's work, "sensitive, poignant, and so terribly honest." Winning second place was Jonathan Skilnick, with a piece that Dr. Morrongiello said, "captured the essence of how Dr. King lived his life and the beauty of his unconditional love."
Lorenzo Hayes won second place in The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. High School Senior Essay Scholarship Award contest. "Your piece was a wonderful tribute to a great humanitarian, but it is also a tribute to you and your family's values," wrote Dr. Morrongiello in a letter to Lorenzo.
