The Board of Trustees and the Staff Association of the Bryant Library are concerned about the article that appeared in last week's issue regarding library negotiations. This article had no byline and no members of the board, administration, or staff were contacted about the content.

Misinformation was given about:

Salaries: The numbers quoted were inaccurate. The library has several categories of librarians and clerical employees. Salaries have ranges, reflecting level of responsibility and length of service. All employees do not receive longevity bonuses, and only eligible part-time employees receive leave-time benefits.

Budget: The library budget has never been turned down according to records kept since 1970. The present budget for 1999/2000 passed with a 72 percent approval rate.

Board and staff are working to "reach consensus" on the first written contract for the Bryant Library, an agreement that will be fair to the community and the staff.

Fran Gaynes, president, Board of Trustees.

Paulette Palumbo, president, Staff Association.
