Upon taking office four-and-a-half years ago, the administration of Janet Galante and several of the current Board of Trustee members undertook the drafting and implementation of a comprehensive Master Plan and Zoning Code for the Village of Roslyn.
Now the BOT has taken the first, tentative steps toward a planned ten-year Master Plan Study on the village's infrastructure. At its last public meeting, BOT members approved the idea of going ahead with the long-term plan.
For now, the study would include an examination of roadways throughout the village to determine whether a master plan is feasible or not. The master plan would cover the rebuilding and resurfacing of roadways in need of repairs. The study would also determine how much annual funding would go into the implementation of a master plan.
In other news, the BOT continued site review discussions on a proposed car wash building for Rallye Motors, 1600 Northern Blvd. There was no vote on granting Rallye approval to build an estimated 16 ft. by 46 ft. car wash on its Northern Boulevard site, but the BOT hopes to make a final vote at its August meeting.
In past meetings, residents on Appletree Lane in East Hills, which sits above the Rallye lot, have expressed concerns over traffic, noise level and even real estate values about the proposed car wash. East Hills Board of Trustee member Linda Nathanson has been a leader for the Appletree Lane residents.
Jeffrey Stadler, an attorney for Rallye, has noted that the Roslyn Board of Appeals has adopted three conditions for constructing the car wash. They include hours of operation, no signage, and no commercial usage. Mr. Stadler said Rallye would meet those conditions. Hours of operation would be 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.
There was no resolution, either, of a longstanding controversy over parking commercial vehicles on Bedells Landing and Skillman Street. A resolution to prohibit such parking practices was tabled by the BOT. The problem arose last winter when residents complained that a local towing company was storing wrecked cars on Skillman. Lawyers for both Carriage Works Towing, 20 Skillman Street and owners of adjacent properties have been working on a compromise solution to the parking situation.
The BOT approved a motion to donate $400 toward the Lillian Pierce Senior Citizen Annual Picnic on Thursday, Aug. 19. The village is also reviewing its current towing contract and is looking for a 24-hour towing service, mainly to serve parking lots in the village, especially those at local apartment complexes.
