Frederic N. Whitley Jr., 93, a 53-year resident of Roslyn, died on March 22, 1999. He was born in Brooklyn and graduated from Pennsylvania Military College. He worked with his father at Frederic N. Whitley and Son, a fireplace and ventilation firm in Brooklyn before WWII. The firm consulted on White House fireplace during the Truman administration and by NY architects and celebrities.
Mr. Whitley served in the Army during WWII in the European campaign. He served in the Army Reserves and was called to active duty during the Korean Conflict. He served in Newfoundland and Turkey. He later worked on a NYS study of the possibility of widening the Erie Canal.
Mr. Whitley restored his 19th Century Roslyn house and was active in village restoration work. He was a volunteer at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and delivered food to people in need. He served as treasurer and trustee of the Roslyn Landmark Society and the Roslyn Preservation Corp. He was an animal lover and had a pet racoon named David.
Mr. Whitley was the husband of the late Dorothy (Burt) who died in 1982 and the late Dorothy who died in 1992. Father of Lee. Grandfather of two. Great-grandfather of two. A memorial service will be held at St. Stephen's Church at a later date. Mr. Whitley was cremated. Donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.
