I recently wrote "To The Editor" about the fact that I, and other members of the East Williston School community were turned away from a meeting of "The Partnership for Education," held at the Shelter Rock Library. Shortly thereafter, I received a letter, dated Feb. 11, 1998 from Janet B. Serle, MD apologizing for denying me admittance.
In her apology letter, Dr. Serle says she was "very concerned that all members of the Partnership would be able to attend." She also writes, "Parking and seating at the Shelter Rock Library are limited." As for parking on that evening, Dr. Serle did not know whether I had been dropped off at the library, whether I came in someone else's car, or whether I had walked. With respect to limited seating, I would have been more than happy to stand at the meeting. Again I reiterate that on Feb. 10, when I arrived at the library, Dr. Serle's reason for not admitting me to the meeting room was that it was "private." She did not mention overbooking, parking, or anything else.
One final note. I am truly skeptical of how sincere this apology by "The Partnership" is. This group held a second meeting on Monday, Feb. 22. Again, our school administrators took part. This second meeting was held at the Roslyn Country Club, and had I wanted to attend, it was clear that unlike the first meeting, this location was private.
With all due respect, I hope residents of the school community do not now have to apply for membership to the Roslyn Country Club in order to find out what is going on in their school district.
