Project Literacy wishes to thank the Rotary Club of Roslyn for their generous support. The Roslyn Rotary Club shows an understanding of the importance of making a stronger and better community by teaching people literacy skills. We regard Rotary to be our partners.
Project Literacy was launched in 1986. This innovative agency recruits, trains and supports volunteer tutors to teach reading, writing and spelling, using a method appropriate for but not limited to people with learning disabilities. Services are free regardless of race, color or creed.
Current research indicates that a lack of phonemic awareness appears to be a major obstacle to learning to read and that individuals with reading disabilities must be provided highly structured programs that directly teach application of phonologic rules to the decoding of print. Project Literacy has recognized that these principles of reading instruction, which are effective for all learners, indeed are critical for learners with reading disabilities.
We provide an instructional program that includes direct training in phonemic awareness; systematic, explicit teaching of sound-symbol relationships (phonics); and direct and integrated instruction in text reading and comprehension. We provide opportunities to develop spelling and orthographic skills as well as reading comprehension strategies. This makes us different from other literacy providers.
If you are reading this and are looking for a satisfying volunteer experience, call 676-7066 or 679-3522 for more information. Call, too, if you need help. Training workshops will start Feb. 20.
