James Gregorski, USN, the son of Charles and Jennie Gregorski of Roslyn Heights, was promoted to the rank of Commander in May 1998. He was also recently selected as the next Commanding Officer of Sea Control Squadron Three One (VS-31) flying the Lockheed S-3B Viking aircraft. A Roslyn High School graduate, he attended Western Michigan University graduating with a BS Degree in business administration. He was commissioned in December 1982 and earned his Naval Aviator Wings of Gold in July 1985.
After completion of S-3A Viking Aircraft Pilot training in August 1986 at San Diego, CA, he reported to Air-Antisubmarine Squadron Three Zero (VS-30) at NAS Cecil Field, Florida. Following a Mediterranean Deployment aboard USS Saratoga (CV-60), he was recognized as US Atlantic Fleet's Pilot of the Year for 1988.
From May 1990 to January 1992 he served with Air Test and Evaluation Squadron One (VX-1) at Patuxent River, Maryland, where he was assigned S-3B aircraft Project Head. He completed Lockheed factory training in the first ES-3A electronic reconnaissance aircraft and conducted initial embarked operations for that aircraft aboard USS Saratoga (CV-60) deployed to the Mediterranean Sea.
Commander Gregorski reported to the VS-22 Checkmates in July 1993 and served as aircraft maintenance department head. While at VS-22 he once again deployed to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf aboard USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69). During Operation Southern Watch, he flew numerous missions helping to enforce the United Nations "No Fly Zone" over Iraq. Additionally, he participation in Operation Deny Flight, and Sharp Guard. These NATO campaigns enforced UN-mandated sanctions preventing seaborne cargo, such as weapons and other war supplies, from entering the Bosnian war zone.
In January 1995 Commander Gregorski reported to Strike-Fighter Weapons School Atlantic as executive officer, responsible for providing fleet squadrons advanced readiness and weapons training. In November, Commander, Naval Air Force, United States Atlantic Fleet in Norwalk, Virginia. He served as S-3/ES-3 Readiness Officer and Flying Hour Program Manager. He was subsequently awarded a Financial Management Subspecialty for oversight of the entire Atlantic Fleet Flying Hour Program - a budget totaling over $1.4 billion.
Commander Gregorski has accumulated over 3,200 flight hours and 450 aircraft carrier arrested landings. His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, four Navy Commendation Medals and the Navy Achievement Medal. He is married to the former Lorraine Czyzyk of New Hyde Park. The Gregorskis reside in Orange Park, FL, with their son, Charlie, and daughter, Janie.
Commander Gregorski is currently spending the Christmas holiday season in Roslyn.
