The Roslyn High School Lady Bulldogs recently completed a successful 1998 season which saw them capture their first ever regular season conference championship. Although the Lady Bulldogs fell to South Side High School in the playoffs, the season featured an outstanding lineup of star performers.

Amy Birnbaum, Courtnery Wunderlich and Angelique Hermanowski were profiled in last week's number. Other stars included Samara Cherne, another All-Conference selection. Miss Cherne provided a constant threat to opposing goalkeepers from her striker position. In the pivotal game of the season against Glen Cove, who at the time was in sole possession of first place, Samara made a spectacular 50-yard dash for a loose ball just before halftime. She saved it inches before it went over Glen Cove's end line, and defly passed it to a streaking Michelle Sklar who hammered it into the back of the net to make the score 2-0. The play was a blow that Glen Cove never recovered from. Thanks, Samara!

Although the team will sorely miss such an excellent cast of characters, there is still hope for the future. Next year's team brings back the conference's leading scorer, Michelle Sklar. Michelle's season was so impressive that she was awarded the prestigious All-Class selection. Michelle was deadly, relentless and clinical in her quest for goals. She netted 19 in all. Nine of those goals came in the form of hat-tricks. Two of the hat-tricks were in back-to-back games, the final one coming in the biggest game of the year, the thrilling showdown with Glen Cove.

Another player that had an outstanding season and who will return to the team next year is All-Conference sweeper Krystie Murray. Game after game, Krystie anchored Roslyn's tenacious defense with skillful slide tackles, accurate clearing balls, and expert leadership. Earlier this year, Coach Best called Miss Murray a "born leader." He added, "if I had 11 Krystie's, not only would we win every game, but we would do it in the classiest fashion imaginable. She embodies the true spirit of what a student-athlete should be all about. The Roslyn community should be proud to have her representing it."
