The quarter-final game of the Senior League Tournament was a big success. The Astros won 14-0 against Islip. Fabulous shutout pitching by Nick Yannaco, who hit three for four at the plate. Wonderful hitting for Andrew Cutrone, who went two for two; and PJ Malmquist, who hit a great shot with the bases loaded to drive in three runs. Now all these outstanding efforts will help the Astors to go on.
The second game on the way to the championship round was another success for the Astros, defeating Malverne 10-2. Standouts for the Astros were Andrew Cutrone, who went four innings and, also, went three for three bringing his production to seven for seven in the series, and John Tunney who went two for three. Outstanding pitching and fielding held Malverne to only two runs. Matt Estreich pitched the final three shutout innings-allowing the Astros to move on.
The prestigious title for the Downstate New York and Long Island title was to be played on Tuesday, July 28. Unfortunately, the Astros were committed to another tournament at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, New York home of the Baseball Hall of Fame. It was with much regret the Astros were not able to play and had to forefit the title game for the Long Island Championship.
The Astros first game at Doubleday Field against the Plainedge Panthers was a great success that went into extra innings. Great pitching jobs by starting pitcher Keith Mitchel, PJ Mlmquist, Jared Barry, John Strohschien, Adam Tuthill, Matt Wright, Matt Estreich and Rich Burns, led to the success. Outstanding hitting by Mike DiBari, who went three for three, and Adam Tuthill's line drive double into the gap driving in one run. Because of his excellent hitting driving DiBari for the go-ahead run in the fifth inning, Chuck Kincade was intentionally walked in the eighth inning to load the bases. Matt Wright's timely hitting was exceptional. Heads up base running by Strohschien scored the winning run on a wild pitch with the bases loaded. The final score was 5-4. As alwas, the team work of the Astros helped them to win the first game at Dobleday Field.
Game two was another success for the Astros. Spectacular pitching by Kyle Lavrey, who pitched the first two innings allowing only one hit and with three strikeouts. Great relieving by Nick Yannaco and Andrew Cutrone, letting up only one run in the next four innings and the super closing job by Rich Buns. Fantastic hitting by Nick Yannaco, who went three for three with an outstanding double to the left field wall, and John Strohschien with two line drive doubles and an RBI. Matt Estreich and Rich Burns each went two for two. The great pitching and consistent hitting were just too much for Plainedge Panthers, who lost the second game to the Astros 10-1. All these achievements helped the Astros to win both of their games at Doubleday Field.
