The Village of Roslyn is asking the New York State Department of Transportation to set up four safety checks in the village after an overloaded truck flipped over while being driven along Old Northern Boulevard at the intersection of West Shore Road in Roslyn.
The accident took place Monday morning, Aug. 10 at 10:15 a.m. The scene of the mishap was the busy intersection that stands near the village hall and directly across from the Roslyn Claremont Hotel.
The driver was identified as Dean Hansen of South Huntington, an employee of Clifford and Sons Transportation of West Babylon. The accident occurred as he was turning the vehicle off West Shore onto Old Northern Boulevard.
After the accident Mr. Hansen was taken by Nassau County ambulance squad to North Shore Hospital in Manhasset where he was treated for minor injuries. The driver claimed malfunctions within the truck were responsible for the accident.
Some residents complained that as a result of the accident, traffic on Mineola Avenue, Willis Avenue, and Roslyn Road was stalled throughout the morning.
According to Roslyn Village officials, Monday's accident was the second of its kind in the past month. The Village promptly sent letters to Clifford Winters and Thomas Oelerich, both with the New York State Department of Transportation, asking for safety checks to set up around the village. "We want an immediate response [to this accident] before someone gets killed," said Roslyn Mayor Janet Galante.
In a letter to Mr. Oelerich, Les Arstark, the village's liaison to the Nassau County police, said that Roslyn "is determined to end what clearly has become a tyranny of trucks and tractor trailers which speed and otherwise illegal use our roads." The letter added that such trucks "ignore [the village's], tonnage codes (4-ton limit)...safety codes (pedestrian crossings) and safe speed codes (25 MPH)."
The village would like checkpoints set up at Old Northern Boulevard at the intersection of Mineola Avenue, Shore Road at the intersection of Old Northern Boulevard, Bryant Avenue covering the intersections of East and West exits from the 25A Viaduct, and the beginning of Main Street where Roslyn Road ends following the LIRR overpass.
The purpose of the checkpoints would be, in part, to determine if trucks about to travel through Roslyn meet village requirements on the weight of trucks on specific village streets.
Section 9-1 of the village stipulates that it is unlawful to "operate, move, cause or knowingly permit to be operated or moved" a truck weighing in excess of 8,000 lbs. on the following Roslyn streets: East Broadway, Layton Street, Main Street from the intersection of Old Northern Boulevard to the intersection of Railroad Avenue, Mott Avenue, and Tatterson Street.
This code applies to through traffic vehicles and is not construed to prevent delivery or pickup trucks from making their rounds in the village. The code also does not apply to "vehicles engaged in any governmental function within the village."
