Board of Trustee member Nolan Myerson has been chosen by Roslyn Mayor Janet Galante to be the village's new deputy mayor. Mr. Myerson is replacing Marlene Freeman, who resigned her position this month due to her family's relocation in New York City.

Mr. Myerson has been a member of the BOT since 1995. That year, he was part of a Clock Tower Party ticket that included John Durkin and Ms. Galante and Ms. Freeman, as respectively, candidates for mayor and deputy mayor. That ticket came into power on the heels of a large anti-Stop and Shop sentiment in the village. Ms. Galante and Ms. Freeman were the only two BOT members to vote against Stop and Shop construction in a November, 1994 vote. Mr. Myerson will be officially sworn in at the August 4 BOT meeting.

Mayor Galante said she considered both Mr. Myerson and Mr. Durkin for the deputy mayor position. "If I could pick two people [for the position], I'd take both of them," the mayor said. She added that Mr. Myerson's work on the village's new master plan and zoning laws played an important role in her decision. Mr. Myerson, the mayor said, put "a great deal of information into the master plan," which in itself was a central goal of the new administration. Nassau County, for instance, has been working on its own countywide master plan and Mr. Myerson recently noted that early drafts bear a resemblance to the final Roslyn plan, especially on environmental research and housing.

Mr. Myerson's place on the Board of Trustees, however, has not yet been filled. Without being specific, Mayor Galante said her office has been in discussion with a member of another village board, but no commitments have been made.

Meanwhile, the most recent BOT meeting included several fond farewells to the outgoing deputy mayor. Mr. Myerson expressed his "absolute pleasure" of working with Ms. Freeman and called her an "inspiration and tremendous continuing factor in the board's actions."

Mayor Galante praised Ms. Freeman as her "right hand person," adding that the village "was in good stead" whenever the mayor had to hand over responsibilities to the deputy mayor. The mayor presented Ms. Freeman with flowers in an inscribed vase. While acknowledging that the meeting was held during the summer holiday season, the mayor also expressed her regret that more people weren't on hand for Ms. Freeman's final meeting.

In her final address to the BOT, Ms. Freeman noted the importance of the village to the entire Roslyn area, including those municipalities outside of Roslyn proper. She maintained that both property values and the quality of life in the Roslyn area are directly affected by the economic conditions in the Village of Roslyn.

Ms. Freeman presented the BOT with her own gift, a lithograph of the village hall that will be placed on one of the building's interior walls. She also thanked, among other people, her fellow BOT members, Village Clerk May Cunningham, the village hall staff and the following citizens of Roslyn: Eleanor Myerhoff, Diane Marx, Jim Kahn, Marshall Ward, Les Arstark, Paul Burros, Carolyn Weber, Steve Kirschman, Ann Barish, Frederic Carlton, Dr. Roger Williams, the late Dr. Roger Gerry and his wife, Peggy, Craig Westergard, and Pia Riverso. Ms. Freeman in particular praised Mayor Galante as someone who is able to "care about and find good" in the citizens of the village.

When asked what she will do now that she doesn't have to attend so many meetings on the village's behalf, Ms. Freeman said she will be working with her husband in New York City as the associate producers of the forthcoming Broadway musical, The Jazz Singer, starring Sam Harris.
