    A quiet November afternoon in Roslyn Estates was shattered by a fire which featured dramatic rescues of a mother and her young child by a contractor working at a neighboring house.

    A week after Nassau voters awarded County Executive Thomas S. Gulotta a landslide victory and Republicans their best showing in some communities in more than a decade, North Hempstead Democrat May Newburger has been declared the winner of this year's supervisor race over Republican challenger Maureen O'Connell, of East Williston.

  • SPORTS: Landau Wins Scholar/Athlete Award

    Wheatley Senior, Rebecca Landau, has been named a recipient of the EAB News 12 Long Island Scholar-Athlete Award. This prestigious award is received by only 30 students from Long Island schools. Rebecca is the first recipient of this award for the 1997-98 school year. Over her high school career, Rebecca has earned all county status more than one time in three separate sports: tennis, basketball, and softball. Recently, she has been designated an outstanding physical education student by the Nassau Zone of New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
