The Women’s Group Presents ‘In Our Own Voice’

Women veterans tell their gripping stories in dramatic monologues at 7:30 p.m. Four monologues based on intensive interviews with women veterans and current servicewomen will be followed by a talkback with the audience facilitated by a servicewoman and a psychotherapist. Women’s Group welcomes your participation in honoring the service of all women in the Armed Forces. The public is invited to attend a program with author Lorraine Abramson. My Race is the memoir of a gifted Jewish athlete growing up under the apartheid system in South Africa. Her grandparents left Eastern Europe to escape oppression, only to find they were living under the oppressive society ruled by apartheid. Port North Spring Boys Basketball

Port North is a 3-year-old independent basketball team based out of Port Washington that plays year round in the super league at Island Garden and various tournaments in the metropolitan area. The program currently has a combined record of 30 - 3 in the winter super league. The emphasis is on teaching the fundamentals, developing good practice habits and preparing players for middle and high school basketball. The team has a professional trainer with over 20 years experience. We are currently looking for experienced and dedicated basketball players in grades 4 through 10 who are interested in trying out for spring and AAU basketball. Muttontown Unitarian Universalist Fellowship

The Fellowship provides an atmosphere of warmth and camaraderie, with talks presented by intelligent enlightening and non-dogmatic speakers who come from the entire spectrum of the Arts, History and Sciences. This is followed by coffee and an informal discussion circle, held in the turn-of-the-18th century farmhouse in a bucolic setting. Help for Seniors

Are you a senior who would like help paying for your Medicare benefits and prescription drugs? Free assistance is only a phone call away if you qualify for extra help because of limited income. There may be a way to alleviate some of the cost of Medicare – deductibles and coinsurance, Part B premiums, prescription drug plans (Part D). Reducing monthly premiums, annual deductibles and co-payments, aiding with coverage gaps (the doughnut hole). Sands-Willets House Tours

From May through October, the Sands-Willets House, circa 1735, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the headquarters of the Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society is open for guided tours of its 10 fully furnished rooms on the first and third Sunday of each month. Also included is a tour of the 1600’s Dutch barn. Tour hours:  2:15 and 3:15 p.m. An admission fee of $5 per adult and $2.50 for children under 12 helps the society maintain the house, its barn and the grounds on which they stand. Runaway Hotline

Nassau County’s Runaway Hotline offers free and confidential counseling 24 hours a day, seven days a week to parents and families of youth experiencing problems at home. Information and referrals are available. Emergency housing is provided to youth if needed. Call 781-9800 before the problem leads to a runaway, throwaway or abuse situation.

Look Good, Feel Better

Is the American Cancer Society’s two-hour class for women undergoing treatment for cancer. It is designed to help them deal with possible appearance-related side effects such as hair loss and skin changes, while enhancing their self-image at the same time. Trained volunteer cosmetologists provide participants with tips on skin care, makeup application, wig/turban styling, etc. Every participant receives a complimentary box of make-up containing the products used in the program. The class is free. Preregistration required. Some of the sessions are done in Spanish and English. Held at North North University Hospital in Manhasset. Call 800-ACS-2345.

Nassau County Museum of Art

The Nassau County Museum of Art, One Museum Dr., Roslyn Harbor, is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Admission is $10 adults; $8 seniors (62+); $4 children (4-12); members free. Weekends only there is a $2 parking fee (members free). There is a docent-led exhibition tour every day at 2 p.m.; meet in the lobby, no reservations are needed. Van Nostrand Starkins House Museum

Located at 221 Main St., Roslyn. Open every Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is $4 adults; $2 children and seniors. Beverly McDermott, museum educator, gives guided tours every half hour. The museum is filled with two rooms of 18th century antique furniture and one room filled with 18th century samplers and archaeological artifacts. The Children’s Hands on Education program is not to be missed. It is filled with 18th century reproductions of children’s clothing, toys and artifacts for children to handle and enjoy. Will reopen in the spring.

St. Hyacinth Thrift Shop
