Friday, 01 January 2010 00:00On Saturday night, Dec. 19, while the area was in the midst of a chilling snowstorm, it was heating up at Madison Square Garden as the Lady Vikings took on opponent Mineola in a non-league girls basketball game. The Lady Vikings had a team lunch in town before taking the Long Island Rail Road to the game. Everyone with a ticket had the opportunity to watch the men’s college basketball game of Duke vs. Gonzaga before the “feature” game of girls basketball. The Garden was gracious as the team was able to use the locker rooms and receive all the benefits of a professional team playing on the Garden floor. Schreiber’s own Voice of the Vikings, John Broza realized his lifelong dream of announcing at Madison Square Garden. Coach Dennis Trottier spearheaded the logistics to have the team play at the Garden. The team sold 350 tickets. Senior co-captain Katie Weil, excited from the first day she heard the team was playing in the “world’s most famous arena” said, “Being able to say you score at the Garden is pretty incredible.” A high spot for the team was when sophomore guard Emily Rosenthal, taking no chances with the multiple three point lines on the Garden floor, hit an NBA three pointer. The support from the community, boys basketball team and coaches and so many in the Port community made for a special event. Congrats to Coach Trotts and Coach Gil on making for a great event.
