Riptide Finish Season in Third Place

The Port Washington Riptide (Soccer BU10) had two objectives before their first season began: have fun and finish above .500.

Mission accomplished.

Winning their last five out of six games, the Riptide wrapped up a successful season with a 3rd Place Division finish and completed their inaugural season 6 – 3.

This final week was a real nail biter, with rankings changing every hour until the last game was played on Saturday.  Early in the morning, on Locust Valley’s home turf, the Riptide capped off their season with a win.  Once again the main ingredient in the Riptide’s victory this week was teamwork.

The final game was won with contributions from both the defense line and the offense.  “Man of the Match” went to Jack Stolper; Jack’s determination yielded two goals for the Riptide while Max Matza capped off the early morning match with his own goal bringing the team to a 3 – 1 victory over the Falcons.

This season, the Riptide’s offense has been led by Evan Steigman and Jack Stolper’s five goals.  Conor Shanahan has scored four times, while Max Matza and Ben Schildkraut have each scored twice.  Aaron Cotumaccio and Grant Bruno, both of whom play offense and defense, have each had four assists this year.

Tommy Dover, the Riptide’s defensive captain, continues to dominate; Tommy’s iron leg even managed a shot on goal in the final game.   Ben Matza, Carlos Castro, and Jack Gilsenan also contributed to the Riptide’s win this weekend and for the season.

The Riptide played against many difficult teams this season.  Some of these teams have been playing together for a few years; in contrast the Riptide boys have been playing together for approximately 12 weeks.  What contributed to the Riptide’s success was their attitude, hard work, and commitment to the team.  Each week the players demonstrated that they are part of the bigger picture; each wanting the other to succeed.  It was that strength in attitude that set this team apart and contributed to their 3rd place finish…Go Riptide!!!
