PW Runners Score in Sands Point Sprint for the Feinstein Institute

Congratulations to Port Washington runners David Hirschwerk, Adam Bleifeld, Michelle Duran, Vera Allen, Eric Gulkis, Sam Mazur, and Robert Schill, all of whom scored with awards in the Sands Point Preserve 5 Kilometer Sprint for the Feinstein Institute, held on the grounds of the Sands Point preserve on Saturday morning, Aug. 15. A total of 350 runners successfully completed the 5 Kilometer (3.107 Miles) course.

Hirschwerk finished in 18th place overall and second in the 35-39 age group with a time of 20 minutes, 38 seconds, and Bleifeld was close behind in 25th place overall and third in that same 35-39 age group in 20:59.

Duran, who lives in Sands Point, was the first local female finisher, scoring as the fifth woman overall and 1st among the women in the 35-39 age group with a time of 22:34. Allen was the oldest female finisher and took top honors among the women in the 75-79 age group with a time of 46:52.

Gulkis (24:54), Mazur (25:05), and Schill (25:50) finished 1-2-3 in the Clydesdale 185-199 Weight Division.

Race Director Abe Bernstein of the host Greater Long Island Running Club went all out to ensure the success of this event, as his way of saying “thank you” to the good people from North Shore-LIJ’s Feinstein Institute who got him back on his feet and back on the roads and track after a bout with Lymphoma. Genentech (“In Business for Life”) signed on as a most generous sponsor this year, and their support was most welcome.

Special thanks go to the “Friends of the Sands Point Preserve” for making the beautiful Sands Point facility available to us, to Preserve Manager Gary Haglich for his enthusiastic cooperation, and to Nassau County Legislator Wayne Wink and North Hempstead Town Clerk Leslie Gross for being on hand to show their support for the event. Leslie successfully completed the course in 47:14. Way to go!

This is not a “PR course.” The trail in the third mile is not easy to navigate and the hill leading up from the trail is particularly nasty!

“Congratulations and thanks to David, Adam, Michelle, Vera, Erik, Sam, and Robert, and to all my other buddies from Port Washington and elsewhere for showing up to enjoy a morning of fun and fitness at beautiful Sands Point,” observed Race Director Bernstein, “and to support my efforts to raise some much needed funds for the Feinstein Institute and the battle against Lymphoma!”

Donations to the Feinstein Institute are still most welcome – and can be sent c/o Abe Bernstein, 54 Trumbull Road, Manhasset, New York 11030.
