On Tuesday, Feb. 28, Port Rowing athletes hosted an Autism Education Seminar by Dr. Volpe, a specialist in the field of autism with 27 years of experience. The goal of the seminar was to educate the Port Rowing athletes who volunteer to work in the adaptive rowing program. This winter Port Rowing introduced and the adaptive program, and the volunteer athletes, “Port Rowing Partners,” have helped kids on the autism spectrum learn to row while improving overall fitness. It is a great mentor program within the community that plans to expand to the water this summer.
On April 21, Port Rowing is hosting a Row for Autism at North Hempstead Beach to support Autism Awareness month. The high school team will race in the morning and then the adaptive program in the afternoon. This event will be the first annual Row for Autism, and certainly not the last. If you have any questions or would like to help with the Adaptive program please contact info @portrowing.com.
