A local Port Washington youth, 9-year-old Daniel Gibson, has qualified to compete in the 75 lb weight class in the 2012 New York State – USA Wrestling Kids Folkstyle Championship held on March 2 through March 4 in Bethpage. Daniel, a fourth grade student at St. Peter of Alcantara school, has been wrestling since the age of 6 for Teeth of The Dog wrestling club based out of Glen Cove, coached by 2012 Hall of Fame inductee and former Michigan wrestler Michael Dergarabedian.
Last weekend, Daniel competed in the 2012 Section 8 Nassau County Youth Wrestling Championships and state qualifier on February 18, held at Island Trees Middle School, and took 3rd place in the county after a heart breaking defeat in the semifinals to eventual gold medalist Jack Richards from Long Beach.
In his first year of tournament action, Daniel medaled in every event he competed in this season, with gold medals at the highly competitive Wantagh and Lindenhurst tournaments, and bronze performances at Farmingdale and at the Al Bevilacqua Massapequa tournament.
Daniel’s record for the 2012 wrestling season is 12 wins and three losses winning two gold and three bronze medals with an impressive record of seven wins by pinning his opponent. When asked, Daniel, an excellent student, states that his plans for his future wrestling career include winning a county and state title and eventually wrestling for the Army team at West Point.
