Schreiber Sports – “Scores and More”

Does it get any better than a packed gym on a Friday night watching basketball teams play for a cause? Last Friday night the girls and boys varsity basketball teams played Plainview JFK in a Coaches vs. Cancer league game. With a raucous full house, the boys team defeated Plainview 40-37 holding off a last minute run. The girls used 40 points as their magic number to win 40-25. The teams raised well over $1,000 in the evening to donate to the American Cancer Society. Great job by the student body and the Port community for showing support of the teams and this worthy cause.

The wrestling team has been quietly racking up impressive matches. They hold a 6-2 record going into the toughest part of their season. Last week Port held a quad meet with Baldwin, Oceanside and Hempstead. Port came away 2-1 in this match and scored 80 points against Hempstead. The next big match is this Friday, Jan. 13 at home and it’s Alumni night. The meet starts at 5 p.m.

The boys swim team holds a 3-1 overall record while being 3-0 in the conference. The team is training hard in the pool and on dry land as they have a big meet this Friday vs. North Shore. The team swims at Great Neck North middle school.

Girls gymnastics has been impressive thus far. The team won their season opener before the break scoring an incredible 130 to Roslyn’s 106.4. The team defeated cross-town rival North Shore 136.25-130.8 in a close meet. The team competes at Sousa Elementary so check the athletics web site for the schedule.

The girls track team has been competing in tough competition this winter. Invitationals against the best competition in Nassau and Suffolk greet the team every week. The 4x800 relay team finished first in the conference meet at St. Anthony’s, the 4x200 relay team came in second and the 55m hurdles in fifth. The team has competed in the Friendship Games finishing fifth in the frosh.soph shot put.

That’s it for now. Check the athletics web page for the most updated schedules!
