Runners from all over Long Island are invited to join in the fun at the “Sands Point Preserve Sprint for the Feinstein Institute” on Saturday morning, Aug. 15. This 5 Kilometer running race offers a unique combination of paved paths and runner friendly trails (and a surprise or two ) through the woodlands and Long Island Sound vistas of the Sands Point Preserve, at the north end of the Port Washington peninsula.
The 216-acre Sands Point Preserve is an unparalleled mixture of natural and landscaped areas. Forests, meadows, beach and cliffs, gardens, and freshwater pond provide habitats for a variety of plants and animals. The proximity of different habitats provided the club the opportunity to create a 5 Kilometer course that will enable local runners and walkers to experience the various aspects of the entire preserve.
The entire net proceeds of this year’s sprint will once again be dedicated to the Feinstein Institute of North Shore-LIJ Health System and its Chronic Lymphatic Lymphoma research and treatment program. Abe Bernstein, one of GLIRC’s veterans who is in remission from Lymphoma (and running even better than ever!), will serve as the sponsor and director of the event, and Abe has brought along GENENTECH (“in Business for Life”) as a sponsor.
Lymphoma is a cancer of the blood that currently afflicts over 15,000 people a year in the United States, and Abe is one of them. Because of the treatment he received at North Shore-LIJ, and the research and discoveries at the Feinstein Institute, Abe is in remission, with normal blood counts, has resumed his running and racing on the road and on the track, and continues to look forward to a great rest of his life.
Awards in the Sands Point Sprint will be presented to the top male and female finishers overall, plus three deep in every 5 year age group through 90 and over, as well as to the top three Male and Female Clydesdales in each of two weight divisions. Special commemorative summer shirts will go to every entrant. Timing and results will be provided by TriandDuIt Multisport using the AMB Computerized Chip Timing System.
Entry fees are $20 for those who register in advance ($17 for pre-registered GLIRC members), and $25 on the day of the race. There is a 50 percent discount for pre-registered runners and walkers under the age of 16. Walkers are very much welcome!
