Hyannis may have the Kennedy family playing touch football but Port’s own Froccaro family plays varsity lacrosse – as well as baseball, tennis, and wrestling. The Schreiber lacrosse teams currently compete with Jeff, Tony, Jackie, Alexa, and Jake. All engage the field ferociously and enjoy the support of a large extended family. Jeff’s talent transports him to Princeton this September but prior to graduation, the team remains his priority. Trish Quirk recently commented, “It’s a cohesive group of talent with potential to take it all.”
In the middle of the season, the boys’ team achieved a national ranking that resulted from a ton of ambitious young talent. Lacrosse, as Jeff Froccaro Sr., noted, “combines the best elements of all sports – speed, agility, and a ball – to create a great action game.”
His three brothers - James, John, and Jason – concurred. However, what will remain essential to this particular season may not be the games won or lost, but the spirit the family brings to the field. James, the oldest brother, attributes the family’s unity, strength, and love to his parents, especially his mother. Sally Froccaro, the matriarch of 5 children and 15 grandchildren, was “always great at anything she ever did, from a giving homemaker to a successful businesswoman.” He maintains the family has been blessed because they all stick together, “like the Marines.” They also have been blessed with long marriages – his parents met at a first birthday party and all the children married childhood sweethearts. Not to mention spouses with outstanding athletic genes – one uncle, Steve Sombretto, played professional lacrosse for many years and achieved legend-like status during his tenure.
There’s still time to catch a home game at the new turf field. Frances Gonzalez observed that, “they’re showing enough gusto to achieve a winning season.” Although the team’s initial winning streak broke, its destiny lies not in discouragement but in a bold execution that acknowledges there is no defeat except from within. The Froccaro Family, understanding this concept, believes that there are few things that cannot be overcome by yielding themselves up and maintaining a strong family structure. And for the rest of us, there’s no failure except in no longer trying.
